Block retaining walls in Logan

Updated October 2026

When a wall has a serious job to do, holding a driveway, carrying a boundary cut or terracing a cut-and-fill block in one go, block is often what the engineer draws. Block retaining walls in Logan come in two main flavours: core-filled Besser block walls on a concrete footing, and interlocking segmental block systems like Link Block or AB that stack without mortar. We connect you with experienced, insured local builders who build both.

Besser block walls

A Besser block wall is reinforced masonry. A concrete footing goes in first, steel starter bars come up out of it, hollow blocks are laid around the steel and the cores are filled with concrete. Finished walls can be rendered, painted, clad in stone or left bare. Built to an engineer's design, this is as strong as domestic retaining gets, which is why it is the common answer for tall cuts, driveway edges and anything carrying a surcharge load like a car or a structure above.

Interlocking block walls

Segmental systems stack purpose-made concrete blocks that lock together and lean back slightly into the slope. No mortar, no core fill, and for garden-height walls often no concrete footing, just a compacted road-base pad. They are quick to build, drain well through their open structure, and curve around gardens nicely. Taller interlocking walls use geogrid layers tied back into the soil, which needs engineering and more excavation.

The Logan factor

Block comes into its own in the two parts of Logan where the ground does the most work. The genuinely hilly country at Bahrs Scrub, Windaroo, Mount Warren Park, Daisy Hill and Cornubia produces tall cuts and driveways on grade, which is engineered masonry territory. And the growth front at Yarrabilba, Flagstone, Logan Reserve and Park Ridge produces benched blocks where one wall has to hold a full storey of level change at a boundary.

Footing design follows the site rather than the suburb. Site classification under the Australian standard decides the footing depth and the reinforcement, block by block, so a shallow standard footing quoted sight unseen is a warning sign. On the low-lying eastern and river-flat parts of Logan the council maps acid sulfate soils, which is one of the things that gets checked before significant excavation, and that matters on a block wall because the footing excavation is the deepest part of the job.

Block walls handle all of it if they are built with proper drainage. Every block wall quote from the builders we refer should include ag-pipe at the base, free draining gravel backfill and weep holes or an outlet, because trapped water after a storm is what cracks and tips block walls, not the soil itself. More on that at retaining wall drainage.

Guide pricing

As a rough 2026 guide, block retaining walls in Australia typically run around $300 to $750 per metre for a wall about a metre high, with core-filled Besser work at the upper end and some sources quoting engineered masonry at $500 or more per square metre of wall face. Guide pricing only. Footings, steel, core fill, rock excavation and engineering move the price more than the blocks do. The retaining wall cost guide breaks down what moves a quote up or down.

Approvals, engineering and licensing

Logan City Council publishes its own criteria. A retaining wall up to 1 metre high from natural ground level is accepted building work provided no loads are imposed above it, such as a building, a structure or a driveway. Approval is required where the total height of the wall and of the fill or cut retained by the wall is greater than 1 metre, where retaining walls are constructed closer than 1.5 metres to any other building or other retaining wall regardless of the height of the walls, or where there is surcharge loading over the zone of influence for the wall.

Block walls are usually at the taller, structural end, so expect an engineer's design and a building approval to be part of the conversation from the start. If the wall is holding a driveway, it is carrying surcharge loading by definition. The rules behind the criteria sit in the Building Regulation 2021, and Logan City Council and private building certifiers apply them. The council's document is undated on its face and councils revise this material, so confirm the position for your wall with Logan City Council or a private building certifier. Before any digging, your builder should lodge a free Before You Dig Australia (BYDA) enquiry to locate underground services.

Queensland separately requires building work valued over $3,300 to be done by a QBCC licensed contractor, which covers almost every block wall. The QBCC licenses the contractor, it does not set the height or proximity rules. The builders we refer are licensed where the work requires it, and the licence is worth checking on the QBCC register before you sign.

How the referral works

Logan Retaining Walls is a referral service. You tell us what the wall needs to do, we pass the job to an experienced, insured local builder who works your suburb, and they call you back with a free quote. No obligation, and you deal with them directly. If a lighter wall might do the job, compare concrete sleeper walls and timber retaining walls first.

Frequently asked questions

Besser block or interlocking block, which should I choose?

Besser for structural jobs: tall cuts, driveways, loads above the wall. Interlocking for garden terracing where speed, cost and looks matter. The builder quoting your job will usually make the call quickly once they see the site.

Do block retaining walls need a concrete footing?

Core-filled Besser walls always do. Low interlocking walls often sit on a compacted road-base pad instead, which is part of why they cost less at garden height.

Do I need approval for a block retaining wall in Logan?

Very likely. Block walls are usually tall enough, or structural enough, to meet more than one of Logan City Council's published triggers: total height of wall plus retained fill or cut over 1 metre, construction closer than 1.5 metres to another building or retaining wall regardless of height, or surcharge loading over the zone of influence. Those rules sit in the Building Regulation 2021, applied by the council and private building certifiers. Confirm with Logan City Council or a private building certifier early, because it changes the design.

Will a block wall move if the ground moves?

Not if the footing was designed for the site. Site classification is done per block under the Australian standard, and the fix for difficult ground is depth, reinforcement and drainage rather than a different block. A wall that moves almost always had a shallow footing, no ag-pipe, or both.
