Timber retaining walls in Logan
Updated October 2026
Timber is the Queensland garden wall. Plenty of backyards from Woodridge to Jimboomba have one, and plenty of them are the original treated pine wall that came with the house, now grey, leaning and held up mostly by habit. If you want timber retaining walls in Logan done properly, we can connect you with experienced, insured local builders who build them to last this time.
Why timber still makes sense here
Timber is usually the cheapest material to build with, it suits established gardens and acreage blocks, and it is forgiving on tight or awkward sites where machinery cannot reach. On the stepped blocks through Daisy Hill, Springwood and Bahrs Scrub, where a yard might fall away in two or three short terraces rather than one tall wall, a well built timber wall is often the sensible answer.
The builders we work with typically use H4 treated pine sleepers for garden walls and hardwood where you want a longer life or a darker finish. Posts are set deep in concrete, sleepers are fixed properly, and the back of the wall gets drainage, because a timber wall without drainage is just a countdown.
What kills timber walls in Logan
Most failed timber walls around here die the same way. Water builds up behind the wall because there is no ag-pipe or gravel backfill, the soil stays wet through a subtropical summer, the timber rots at ground level and the weight of saturated soil pushes the wall over.
The north-eastern hilly belt is where this shows up most. Daisy Hill, Rochedale South, Cornubia, Shailer Park, Springwood, Underwood and Mount Warren Park were built out through the 1980s and 1990s on bigger, sloping blocks, and the timber sleeper walls that came with those houses are now around 30 years old. That is the end of a treated pine wall's life even when it was built well. Acreage and bush-edge blocks around Greenbank, Jimboomba, Logan Village, Forestdale and Carbrook add constant leaf litter and runoff that clogs whatever drainage was there.
Termites are the other factor, and this is termite country. H4 treated pine is rated for in-ground use and resists them, but untreated offcuts, old hardwood and anything that bridges soil to a house frame are worth avoiding. A builder who knows the region will raise this before you do.
That is why the quotes you get through us should spell out drainage: ag-pipe behind the base, free draining gravel backfill and somewhere for the water to go. If a quote does not mention drainage, ask why. We cover this in more detail on our retaining wall drainage page.
Guide pricing
As a rough 2026 guide, timber sleeper retaining walls in Australia typically run around $200 to $450 per metre for a wall about a metre high, with hardwood at the upper end. Treat these as guide pricing only. Access, height, soil and drainage all move the number, which is why a free on-site quote beats any calculator. Our retaining wall cost guide breaks down the price drivers.
Approvals and licensing
Logan City Council publishes its own criteria, which is more than most councils do, and timber garden walls are exactly where people assume they are safe. A retaining wall up to 1 metre high from natural ground level is accepted building work provided no loads are imposed above it, such as a building, a structure or a driveway. Approval is required where the total height of the wall and of the fill or cut retained by the wall is greater than 1 metre, where retaining walls are constructed closer than 1.5 metres to any other building or other retaining wall regardless of the height of the walls, or where there is surcharge loading over the zone of influence for the wall.
Read that middle one again, because it is the one that catches low timber walls. A short terrace built a metre from the house, or a second wall stepped close behind the first, needs approval on distance alone regardless of how low both walls are. The rules behind those criteria sit in the Building Regulation 2021, and Logan City Council and private building certifiers apply them. The council's document is undated on its face and councils revise this material, so confirm your own wall with Logan City Council or a private building certifier before you build. Before any digging, your builder should lodge a free Before You Dig Australia (BYDA) enquiry to locate underground services.
One more rule worth knowing, and it is a separate one: in Queensland, building work valued over $3,300 generally requires a QBCC licensed contractor. The QBCC licenses the contractor, it does not set the height or proximity rules. Most new timber walls land above that value, so ask for the licence number and check it on the QBCC register. The contractors we refer are licensed where the work requires it.
How the referral works
Logan Retaining Walls is a referral service, not a construction company. You tell us what you need through the form, we pass it to an experienced, insured local retaining wall builder who works your suburb, and they call you back with a free quote. No call centre, no obligation, and you deal with the builder directly from there. We also cover concrete sleeper walls if you want a no-rot alternative in a timber-look finish.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a timber retaining wall last?
A properly built treated pine wall with good drainage typically lasts 15 to 25 years, and hardwood can go longer. Poor drainage can halve that, and a wet subtropical summer is harder on timber than a dry climate. The original builder's choices matter more than the timber brand.
Is timber cheaper than concrete sleepers?
Usually yes. Timber is generally the cheapest retaining wall material to build with, while concrete sleepers cost more upfront but never rot and cannot be eaten. If the wall is structural or over a metre, many builders will steer you toward concrete sleepers.
Do I need approval for a low timber garden wall in Logan?
Maybe, and height is not the only test. Logan City Council's criteria treat a wall up to 1 metre from natural ground level with no loads above it as accepted work, but also require approval where a wall is constructed closer than 1.5 metres to any other building or retaining wall regardless of height, or where there is surcharge loading over the zone of influence. Those rules sit in the Building Regulation 2021, applied by the council and private building certifiers. Confirm your wall with Logan City Council or a private building certifier.
Can an old timber wall be repaired instead of replaced?
Sometimes. If the posts are sound and the lean is minor, repairs can buy years. If the posts have rotted at ground level, replacement is usually the honest answer. See our retaining wall repairs page.
