Park Ridge South is the slower-changing half of the Park Ridge pair. Blocks are larger, there is more open ground, and the work tends to be about making a big block usable rather than finishing a compact estate lot. Same postcode, different job.

That changes what sells. The walls here are more often about a shed pad, a driveway that has to climb or cross a fall, or a usable flat area carved out of a sloping back half, and less often about a boundary level change with the neighbour.

We connect you with experienced, insured local builders who work the bigger blocks out this way.

Common wall situations in Park Ridge South

The shed or machinery pad. A level pad cut into a slope, with the cut retained on the uphill side and sometimes the fill retained on the downhill side. The shed above a wall is surcharge loading, which is one of the council's approval triggers in its own right.

The driveway. Long driveways on larger blocks often cross the fall rather than running straight down it, so one edge needs holding. A driveway above a wall is also surcharge loading, and that puts the wall with an engineer.

The usable yard. A back half at natural ground, terraced into something you can mow, fence or put a pool on. Often two or three shorter walls rather than one tall one, which raises the proximity question below.

Approvals on a bigger block

Logan City Council publishes its own criteria. A retaining wall up to 1 metre high from natural ground level is accepted building work provided no loads are imposed above it, such as a building, a structure or a driveway. Approval is required where the total height of the wall and of the fill or cut retained by the wall is greater than 1 metre, where retaining walls are constructed closer than 1.5 metres to any other building or other retaining wall regardless of the height of the walls, or where there is surcharge loading over the zone of influence for the wall.

A larger block does not get you out of it. The proximity trigger applies to any other building or retaining wall, so a low wall beside a shed, a garage or a second wall in a terrace needs approval regardless of height. And on a big block the surcharge trigger is the one most often overlooked, because the loads out here are sheds, tanks, vehicles and machinery rather than houses.

The rules behind the criteria sit in the Building Regulation 2021, and Logan City Council and private building certifiers apply them. The council's document is undated on its face, so confirm your own wall with Logan City Council or a private building certifier before you build.

Materials and water

Concrete sleeper walls suit working areas because they go up fast with machinery and ask nothing of you afterwards. Block retaining walls come in under driveways and structures. Sandstone retaining walls are the usual pick near a house or an entrance, partly for looks and partly because big stone is a gravity wall that tolerates ground movement.

Water is the bigger technical issue on a large block, because the catchment above a wall can be substantial. A wall designed only for soil load will not cope with half an acre draining into it. Cut-off drains upslope, clean aggregate, geotextile fabric and a proper outlet are not optional at this scale. Our retaining wall drainage page explains the layers.

Ask for the wall, the earthworks, the drainage and the spoil cartage as separate lines, and read our retaining wall cost guide before comparing.

Frequently asked questions

Does a shed pad wall need approval?

It can, and the shed itself is often the reason. Surcharge loading over the zone of influence for the wall is one of Logan City Council's approval triggers, separate from height. Confirm with the council or a private building certifier before you cut the pad.

Can the spoil stay on site?

Often yes on a block this size, and it is a real saving against cartage. The builder will tell you whether the material is suitable to spread and where it can legally go.

Is one tall wall or two short walls better?

It depends on the fall, the use of the space and the approval position. Walls closer than 1.5 metres to each other need approval regardless of height, so terracing is not automatically the simpler path. Ask for both priced.
