Crestmead sits in the 4132 postcode with Marsden, a mix of 1980s and 1990s housing with a large industrial precinct on one side. The residential streets have modest fall, so the walls are mostly short, and the problem they run into is almost always about where the water is allowed to go rather than how much ground they hold.

We connect you with experienced, insured local builders who work Crestmead and settle the drainage question before they quote the wall.

The back-fence wall

The classic Crestmead job sits at the back or side boundary, holding a small level difference, with a fence on top of it and a downpipe somewhere nearby. It is a short wall doing an easy job, and it still fails, because there is no outlet behind it.

Trapped water pushes directly on a wall, on top of the extra weight of saturated soil. A knee-high wall was never built for that. The remedy is not a taller wall. It is ag-pipe behind the base with fall to a legal point of discharge, a free draining gravel column, geotextile fabric so fines do not clog it, and weep holes or outlets at the face. Our retaining wall drainage page explains the three parts and why skipping one makes the system limp.

Where the water is allowed to go

A legal point of discharge normally means your own property's stormwater system rather than over the fence onto a neighbour, and this is the part of a cheap quote that is usually missing.

Logan is simpler than most of South East Queensland here. The stormwater pits and pipes in the street belong to Logan City Council. The water and sewer mains belong to Logan Water, which is a commercial business unit of the same council. One organisation owns the roads, the stormwater and the water and wastewater network, so there is one place to ask, and the builder quoting your job will confirm what your connection needs to be rather than guess.

Approvals

Logan City Council publishes its own criteria. A retaining wall up to 1 metre high from natural ground level is accepted building work provided no loads are imposed above it, such as a building, a structure or a driveway. Approval is required where the total height of the wall and of the fill or cut retained by the wall is greater than 1 metre, where retaining walls are constructed closer than 1.5 metres to any other building or other retaining wall regardless of the height of the walls, or where there is surcharge loading over the zone of influence for the wall.

For a suburb of short walls, the proximity trigger is the one worth knowing. A low wall within 1.5 metres of the house, the shed or another wall needs approval regardless of how low it is, and almost nobody quoting a back-fence wall will mention it. The rules behind the criteria sit in the Building Regulation 2021, and Logan City Council and private building certifiers apply them. The council's criteria document is undated on its face, so confirm your own wall with Logan City Council or a private building certifier before you build.

Materials and cost

Timber retaining walls are the cheapest to build and last 15 to 25 years when drained properly. Concrete sleeper walls cost more and nothing in them rots or gets eaten, which is worth weighing on a damp back boundary in termite country. Short walls in tight spots are labour rather than material, so access shows in the price. Read our retaining wall cost guide before comparing quotes.

Frequently asked questions

Can the drainage discharge into the street?

That depends on what the council permits for your block. The street stormwater network is Logan City Council's, so the discharge has to be to a legal point, and the builder will confirm it rather than assume.

A downpipe runs out behind my wall. Is that the problem?

Very often it is the whole problem. Redirecting a downpipe away from behind a wall is one of the cheapest and most effective things you can do, and it is worth checking before anyone prices a new wall.

Does a knee-high wall need approval?

It can, on proximity. Approval is required where a wall is constructed closer than 1.5 metres to any other building or retaining wall regardless of the height of the walls. Confirm with Logan City Council or a private building certifier.
