Forestdale is acreage inside suburban Logan: large blocks, long driveways, plenty of trees, and a different kind of wall job to the estates a few kilometres away. The work here is about making a big block usable and keeping water under control across a lot of ground, rather than holding a boundary level change on a compact lot.
We connect you with experienced, insured local builders who work the Forestdale blocks and have the machinery to get to the back of one.
The acreage jobs
Shed and machinery pads. A level pad cut into a slope, with the cut held on the uphill side and sometimes the fill held below. The shed above the wall is surcharge loading, which is an approval trigger in its own right.
Long driveways. A driveway that crosses the fall rather than running down it needs one edge held, and a driveway above a wall is surcharge loading too. Driveway edges that have started to drop away on the downhill side are a common enquiry.
Batters and slips. Where a batter keeps moving after heavy rain, the fix is often regrading, cut-off drains and a modest toe wall rather than a tall structure. A builder should look at where the water is going before anyone quotes a wall.
Feature walls near the house. Sandstone retaining walls suit the setting and the frontages here, and big stone is a gravity wall that tolerates ground movement. For working areas, concrete sleeper walls go up fast with machinery and need nothing from you afterwards.
Water, because the catchment is large
On an acreage block the catchment above a wall can be substantial, and a wall built only for soil load will not cope with a paddock or a long slope draining into it. Cut-off drains upslope, clean aggregate, geotextile fabric and a proper outlet are not optional at this scale. Leaf litter is the other factor out here, since it clogs whatever drainage was installed and nobody notices until a wall starts weeping mud. Our retaining wall drainage page explains the layers.
Approvals on a big block
Logan City Council publishes its own criteria. A retaining wall up to 1 metre high from natural ground level is accepted building work provided no loads are imposed above it, such as a building, a structure or a driveway. Approval is required where the total height of the wall and of the fill or cut retained by the wall is greater than 1 metre, where retaining walls are constructed closer than 1.5 metres to any other building or other retaining wall regardless of the height of the walls, or where there is surcharge loading over the zone of influence for the wall.
Acreage owners most often trip the surcharge trigger, because the load above the wall is a shed, a tank, a driveway or machinery rather than a house and it does not feel like a building. It still counts. The proximity trigger applies to any other building or retaining wall, so a low wall beside a shed is in scope regardless of height. The rules behind the criteria sit in the Building Regulation 2021, and Logan City Council and private building certifiers apply them. The council's document is undated on its face, so confirm your own job with Logan City Council or a private building certifier before you start. Before any digging, your builder should lodge a free Before You Dig Australia (BYDA) enquiry to locate underground services.
Getting a comparable quote
Ask for the wall, the earthworks, the drainage and the spoil cartage as separate lines. Access is good out here, which helps, and spoil can often stay on the property, which helps more. Read our retaining wall cost guide before comparing.

Frequently asked questions
Can the spoil stay on site?
Often yes on a block this size, which is a real saving against cartage. The builder will tell you whether the material is suitable to spread and where it can legally go.
Does a shed pad wall need approval?
It can, and the shed is often the reason. Surcharge loading over the zone of influence is one of Logan City Council's triggers, separate from height. Confirm with the council or a private building certifier before you cut the pad.
Is it worth grouping jobs together?
Usually, yes. Machinery float and travel are charged per visit, so doing the pad, the driveway edge and the drainage in one go costs less than three separate visits.
