Updated October 2026

Boronia Heights shares the 4124 postcode with Greenbank, west of Browns Plains, and the name is a fair description. The ground here sits higher than the flats to the east, so blocks carry more fall than they do across much of western Logan, and more fall means more retaining wall per house.

The stock is largely 1980s and 1990s, so the walls that came with the houses are around 30 years old and working harder than a wall on a flat block ever had to.

We connect you with experienced, insured local builders who work the elevated blocks here and quote for the fall rather than for an average lot.

Check the overlay before you compare quotes

Parts of Logan sit inside the Logan Planning Scheme 2015 landslide hazard and steep slope area overlay, and the trigger is mapped on slope. A property report in the council's own document store shows it as landslide at or above 15 per cent slope.

The mapping runs parcel by parcel rather than suburb by suburb, so being in an elevated suburb is a reason to check rather than a reason to assume either way. Pull Logan City Council's property report for your address. If the overlay applies, tell the builder before they quote, because it changes what the council will accept and a builder who finds out afterwards has to reprice the job.

Almost no competitor page will tell you to do this, and it is free to do.

What the fall does to a wall

Two things cost money on a sloping block. Height, because soil pressure grows faster than height does, so each extra metre brings deeper footings, heavier posts and usually an engineer. And catchment, because a wall on a slope has ground above it feeding water toward it every time it rains.

That second one is why drainage is not a line item to trim here. Ag-pipe behind the base with fall to a legal point of discharge, a free draining gravel column, geotextile fabric and weep holes or outlets. The street stormwater network belongs to Logan City Council and the builder will confirm the connection. Our retaining wall drainage page explains why water rather than weight is what fails walls.

The driveway on grade

A driveway that climbs or crosses the fall needs one edge held, and that wall is carrying a vehicle. It is structural whatever its height, and it is the wall you least want to lose because losing it takes the access to the house with it. Movement in a driveway wall is worth treating as urgent: see leaning or collapsed wall if it has shifted. Expect an engineer and often block retaining walls.

What the council publishes

Logan City Council publishes its own criteria. A retaining wall up to 1 metre high from natural ground level is accepted building work provided no loads are imposed above it, such as a building, a structure or a driveway. Approval is required where the total height of the wall and of the fill or cut retained by the wall is greater than 1 metre, where retaining walls are constructed closer than 1.5 metres to any other building or other retaining wall regardless of the height of the walls, or where there is surcharge loading over the zone of influence for the wall.

On a sloping block the height test is the one to read twice, because it counts the wall plus the fill or cut retained rather than just the exposed face. A driveway above a wall is surcharge loading, named in the criteria. And a terraced back yard with stepped walls close together trips the proximity trigger regardless of height.

The rules behind the criteria sit in the Building Regulation 2021, and Logan City Council and private building certifiers apply them. The QBCC licenses the contractor separately, and Queensland requires a QBCC licensed contractor for building work valued over $3,300. The council's criteria document is undated on its face, so confirm your own wall with Logan City Council or a private building certifier before you build.

Replacement is usually concrete sleeper walls. Treat any per-metre figure as guide pricing and read our retaining wall cost guide.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get the council's property report?

Ask Logan City Council for the property report for your address. It lists the overlays that apply, including the landslide hazard and steep slope area overlay, which is the one that matters for a wall on a slope.

My wall looks under a metre. Does the overlay or the height test still catch me?

Possibly both. The height test counts the wall plus the fill or cut it retains, not just the face, and the overlay applies parcel by parcel on slope. Check the report and confirm the wall with the council or a private building certifier.

Why is a hill quote higher than an online calculator?

Height and catchment. Taller walls need deeper footings, heavier posts and often an engineer, and a slope feeds water at the wall, so the drainage is a bigger job. Both are real costs rather than markup.
